Priests and Teachers

Priests and Teachers are persons consecrated or ordained to preach and teach. Nephi consecrated Jacob and Joseph “that they should be priests and teachers over the land of my people” (2 Nephi 5:26). Alma, having authority from God, ordained “one priest to every fifty” to preach and teach concerning the kingdom of God (Mosiah 18:18).

King Mosiah gave Alma power to “ordain priests and teachers over every church” in Zarahemla (Mosiah 25:19). Aaron and his brethren established churches and consecrated priests and teachers among the Lamanites “to preach and to teach the word of God” (Alma 23:4). Elders ordained them after prayer by laying on hands, saying, “I ordain you to be a priest” or “I ordain you to be a teacher,” and ordained them according to God’s gifts and callings by the power of the Holy Ghost (Moroni 3:1-4).
